Dordogne Pre-History Tour

dordogne cycling tourdordogne MapBeautiful chateaux, famous pre-history site, and terrific food: This is the Dordogne and is one of the more popular places to cycle in France for good reason. Here on this tour you get to experience the force of water and the large rivers that have cut the limestone plateau and provided for all the now famous grottos that prehistoric man chose as his canvas. You can visit these grottos, explore the historic aspects of important towns such as Les Eyzies, Rocamadour, Sarlat, La Roque Gageac, Domme, and more. See chateaux, and stay in deluxe chateaux hotels.

This is really a "Best Of" tour when it comes to seeing the important sites and experiencing the regional food and lodging. Your guides will be a their best too, and as our guest, you will get to know the Dordogne personally. The cycling is moderate to moderate+; the terrain is not flat, and some sections are hilly. Your deluxe hotel will be waiting at the end of the ride, and a perfect place to rest by the pool after a well spent time on the bike.

" Everything went so smoothly and we couldn't have asked for a better guide then Patrick. He was there every step of the way, providing stellar advice on were to ride, fixing mechanical issues and provide nutrition. Clearly the support exceeded my expectations. Thanks again for hard work in arranging the trip and to Patrick for making the trip happen!"

DAY 1 DAY 2

Day 2: Cycling to Montignac and back to Les Eyzies - up to 60 km cycling.
After a delicious breakfast at our hotel, its off for an incredible day of riding and sightseeing. One of the highlights of visiting the Dordogne is the opportunity to visit the regions famous painted caves. We start the day with a visit to the polychrome cave of Font de Gaume. This cave is one of only three in the world with polychrome (multi colored) paintings, and the only one still open to the public. After our visit to Font de Gaume, its back on the bikes as we meander through ancient villages and gorgeous landscapes. We picnic on the banks of the Vezere river before eventually arriving in the village of Montignac. Montignac is a small village made famous by the greatest polychrome cave in the world, Lascaux. Discovered in 1940, the original Lascaux cave has been closed to the public since the 1960s, but we visit the near replica Lascaux II that was created to give us all a glimpse into the lives of our ancestors. Our afternoon ride back to Les Eyzies is a fun filled ride with beautiful scenery and rolling hills. You should have time to further explore Lez Eyzies this evening before heading out for dinner on our own. (B,L).

We will arrive in the medieval village of Sarlat with time to explore its ancient alleys and pathways. Our hotel is the charming 4 star Clos La Boetie located in the village center. Sarlat is the best preserved Medieval village in all of France and also happens to be the Worlds capital of Foie Gras and truffles! Photo ops are a plenty and you also have time to stroll through the villages ancient stone streets. We leave Domme and enjoy a great downhill before heading off to visit more Chateaux and villages in the afternoon. For those wanting extra miles, follow your guide this afternoon and discover remote roads and lost villages.
